Internship
The Centre for Enabling EA Learning and Research is offering a three-month internship at the EA Hotel, where the Intern will work alongside our Operations and Community Managers. The Intern will shadow their activities, undertake small projects typical of the job, and benefit from the supervision and mentorship of one Manager throughout. Over time, the Intern will gain hands-on experience, and gradually learn the skills necessary to become an effective Operations and Community Manager in a similar setting. Though free room and board will be offered, the position is unpaid.
Our mission
CEEALAR is a highly cost-effective organization enabling promising individuals to pursue EA learning, research and non-profit entrepreneurship that would not otherwise happen. We do that through the EA Hotel.
The EA Hotel welcomes individuals from across the globe who are driven to improve the world effectively and/or avert risks of global catastrophe. Residents are offered a place to stay, vegan food, a beautiful community of peers, and a chance to focus on their altruistic pursuits, free from distractions and financial concerns.
Some come to the Hotel to upskill—whether through formal programs or self-directed learning—preparing themselves to contribute effectively to high-impact causes. Other residents are researchers, in need of stability and slack to pursue deep work. Finally, aspiring charity entrepreneurs use their time at CEEALAR to develop new projects, often meeting potential collaborators along the way.
At times, the EA Hotel also hosts EA-aligned events. Workshops, boot camps and hackathons from time to time bring an additional spark of life to our cozy home.
What you will do
Many things! Potentially including, but not limited to:
Onboarding new residents, ensuring they get comfortable, familiar with the place and the way it works;
Planning and enacting a weekly distribution of labour among residents such that everyone’s need for tasty vegan food is consistently met;
Spotting and addressing situations of need;
Maintaining community morale at a high level, and resolving conflict if it arises;
Conducting end-of-stay interviews;
Moderating the CEEALAR Discord server;
Communicating to the public (e.g. keeping the website up to date, posting updates to social media and the EA Forum);
Answering email enquiries;
Coordinating with Managers, Trustees and Advisors to vet applicants;
Calling and overseeing contractors and inspecting completed jobs for repairs and improvements (or doing them yourself when possible);
Helping Managers oversee safety systems (fire safety, first aid procedures, etc.);
More generally, doing what it takes to ensure the hotel is an increasingly welcoming, safe, comfortable, productive environment; this is an unusual role with a lot of facets, so prioritising among and figuring out how to do many tasks that aren’t on this list will be a big part of it.
Your typical day may look somewhat like this:
8:30 breakfast in our cozy living room
9:00 start-of-day check-in with your supervising manager; sharing of plans for the day
a whole free morning to do whatever your heart may desire!
lunch
14:30 work session begins
18:00 work session ends; end-of-day check-in with your supervising manager; reflection on the day
delicious vegan dinner with everybody else!
chats, games, social events, fun stuff
plenty of sleep
That being said, chances are typical days will be more the exception than the norm. You will often need to be flexible, sometimes changing your plans to react to the unexpected and sometimes planning your day around the Hotel’s needs.

Preferred
Ceealar would sponsor a Charity Worker visa for the right applicant, and if this Internship offer resonates with you we hope you will apply, regardless of other circumstances. That being said, sponsoring a visa has a non-negligible cost; therefore, all else being the same, we would prefer a candidate already in possession of the right to work in the United Kingdom.
